In 2014, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television released the "2014 Press and Publication Industry Analysis Report," providing an in-depth look at the performance of the publishing, printing, and distribution sectors. According to the report, the industry generated a total operating income of 1996.71 billion yuan, marking a year-on-year growth of 9.4%. Meanwhile, the total profit reached 156.37 billion yuan, reflecting an 8.6% increase compared to the previous year. These figures highlight the overall resilience of the sector despite challenges in specific areas.
One notable trend was the decline in the volume of printed materials. The total number of books nationwide dropped by 1.5%, reaching 8.19 billion copies (sheets), while the total number of printed sheets fell by 1.2% to 70.43 billion. Newspapers also saw a significant drop, with a total circulation of 46.39 billion copies, down 3.8%, and printed sheets decreasing by 8.4% to 192.23 billion. Similarly, the number of national journals declined by 5.4%, with printed sheets falling by 5.7% to 18.36 billion. These reductions signal a continued shift away from traditional print media.
Despite the decline in print volumes, the printing and copying industry still managed to achieve modest growth. The total operating income for the sector reached 174.402 billion yuan, representing a 5.8% increase from the previous year. However, this growth came with a slight reduction in market share, as it accounted for 58.8% of the industry's total operating income, down 2 percentage points from the prior year. The total profit for the printing and copying industry rose by 5.0%, showing that the sector remained profitable even amid declining demand.
Black and white printing output decreased by 3.0% to 320 million orders, while color printing output fell by 1.2% to 2.53 billion. Binding output also declined sharply, dropping by 11.1% to 320 million orders. In comparison, 2013 had seen smaller declines, with black and white printing output slightly down by 0.1% and color printing output decreasing by 55.2%—a much steeper drop than in 2014. This suggests that the decline in 2014 was not as severe as previously feared, but still reflects ongoing pressure on the industry.
While the proportion of operating income from printing and copying dropped slightly, it remained a critical component of the broader publishing industry. The sector's high market share underscores its importance in supporting the news and publishing ecosystem.
Interestingly, the profit growth rate in 2014 outpaced the operating income growth, which is a positive sign. However, this dynamic changed in 2014, where the total profit growth rate fell below that of operating income, indicating some financial strain.
The performance of listed printing companies also showed improvement. By the end of 2014, the combined market capitalization of 31 publishing and printing companies reached 260.18 billion yuan, a 49.5% increase from 2013. Among these, 10 printing companies saw their market capitalization rise by 25.5%, while 10 others grew by 26.2%. Although this growth was slightly lower than that of publishing and distribution companies, it still reflected a strong upward trend.
Lastly, the development of printing industry parks remains a work in progress. Out of 21 national press and publication industry bases, the Liaoning National Printing Industry Base achieved the highest operating income, exceeding 10 billion yuan. Other parks, such as those in Xi'an, Jiangxi, and Shanghai Jinshan, reported operating incomes below 5 billion yuan, highlighting the uneven development across different regions.
