Green printing has become a widely accepted concept in recent years, with significant progress made since its implementation four years ago. In 2011, the first batch of 60 printing companies that passed green certification began to see real benefits. One of them is Beijing Jingshi Printing Co., Ltd. As early as 2010, when the former National Press and Publication Administration launched a pilot project for green printing of primary and secondary school textbooks nationwide, Jingshi Printing actively participated. After four years of development, green practices now permeate every aspect of the company—green factories, eco-friendly materials, sustainable production processes, and environmentally responsible products. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the factory and witness the true meaning of green printing.
Implementing Green Practices Across the Entire Process
The company is located in Beijing, the political and cultural center of China, where it's expected to set an example. “Green printing is a national initiative that benefits both the country and the people. We are willing to sacrifice some profits to ensure environmental responsibility,†said Wu Zuyi, Executive Deputy General Manager of Jingshi Printing. From the very beginning, the company ensures that all raw materials meet green standards. They use environmentally certified paper, soy-based inks, and water-based adhesives instead of traditional oil-based ones. These choices help maintain product quality while reducing environmental impact.
The plate-making process is one of the most polluting stages in traditional printing. To address this, Jingshi Printing uses CTP (Computer-to-Plate) technology, eliminating the need for film and reducing waste. They also installed a wastewater treatment system that purifies used water before discharge, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. For hazardous waste, the company partners with approved environmental firms to safely dispose of items like used ink, solvents, and chemicals. Air purification systems are installed in each workshop, and regular testing confirms that emissions and noise levels are within legal limits.
Small details also reflect the company’s commitment to sustainability. LED lighting is used throughout the facility, energy consumption is carefully managed, and old blankets from large machines are reused on smaller ones. Employees are provided with protective gear and undergo regular health checkups to ensure a safe working environment.
Digital Printing: A Greener Future
For a city like Beijing, the pursuit of green initiatives never ends. While maintaining high environmental standards in traditional printing, Jingshi Printing is also embracing digital printing as a more sustainable alternative. “Digital printing eliminates the need for plates and water, making it much more efficient and eco-friendly,†explained Wu. This method allows for on-demand printing, which significantly reduces inventory and minimizes waste of paper, ink, and other resources. As the industry moves toward greener solutions, Jingshi Printing is leading the way by integrating digital technology into its operations, proving that sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand.
