Recently, Japan’s Bridgestone and Kyushu University jointly developed a powder mobile electronic paper that uses a plastic base plate, and was officially released on the “SID 2004†held in Seattle, USA.
The powder-moving electronic paper is a panel in which a charged two-color powder is moved in a direction perpendicular to the bottom plate by an electric field for display. The feature is high response speed, only 0.2ms. It is said that this time, by replacing the original glass substrate with a plastic substrate, "thin and strong electronic paper" has been realized.
Both Bridgestone and Kyushu University have jointly released displays of two types, one is a 7-segment display panel, and the other is a passive array (PM) drive panel. Plastic base plate thickness is 290μm. The PM drive panel has a screen size of 3.1 inches and a resolution of 160 x 160 pixels. The problem with plastic baseplates is that due to thermal expansion and contraction larger than the glass baseplate, pixel locations can be misaligned due to deformation of the baseplate. Therefore, in order to make the pixel position not change due to the thermal expansion and contraction of the bottom plate, Bridgestone and Kyushu University designed the ribs of the pixels into a shape of a peak.
