According to Nikkei BP, the Institute of Superconducting Engineering (SRL) of the International Institute of Superconductivity Industrial Technology (ISTEC) of Japan has successfully developed a superconductor block material that can obtain a magnetic field of 15 Tesla at 30K. The material can be widely used in flywheel, magnetic separation, engine and magnetic field generation devices.
Difficulties in the development of superconducting blocks are the critical current density and the size of the blocks. The material developed this time was lanthanide oxide superconductor. Due to the size of the experimental device, the superconducting block has a diameter of 2 cm.
The problem that has arisen in previous developments is that once superconducting blocks are subjected to a strong magnetic field, the superconducting block will be damaged by its own magnetic field. In order to improve the mechanical strength of the material, SRL has newly developed an epoxy resin impregnation method. That is, the epoxy resin is impregnated into the block material by using defects such as cracks on the surface of the block superconductor. As a result, the bending failure strength of the block material exceeds the 100 MPa required for practical use.
SRL will begin to transfer this technology to private companies from July 2001.
