NICT develops fabric RFID tags

The National Institute of Information and Communication Research (NICT) of Japan recently developed and prototyped a cloth-made electronic label that can be pasted on metal surfaces and human bodies. The tag is implemented by using a fabric planar antenna that replaces the metal part of the micro-strip antenna with a cloth. This trial is a 2.4 GHz band antenna and can also be applied to a UHF band (950 MHz).

Electronic tags generally use linear antennas. However, if the linear antenna is placed directly on a conductor such as metal or human body, the function will be lost. In addition, microstrip antennas have previously been used in electronic tags, but due to the use of a harder base plate, it is difficult to paste on curved surfaces of metal and human body surfaces. Therefore, NICT uses cloth microstrip antennas that have been developed so far. The material cost of the fabric antenna is only 1/10 of that of the original microstrip antenna, which reduces the cost.
