When Uga was taken to the veterinary clinic, the hind limb injury was extremely serious and the veterinarian thought that his hind limbs might have been bitten by the mouse. The veterinarian worked tirelessly to cure one of Uga's hind legs, but had to amputate the other, which made it impossible to crawl anymore. Fortunately, Nicola Di Girolamo, an innovative veterinarian, did not give up treatment for this disabled turtle.
To help Uga re-crawl, Girolamo found the local 3D printing center, Roma Stampa, which was very interested in helping Uga's project and immediately put 3D printing technology into the test.
The first step in the project is to measure the body size of the Uga and ensure that the printed hind legs are the right size. This includes making a gypsum mold for the turtle shell and performing a 3D scan of the shell to generate accurate data images. This hind limb is a two-wheeled vehicle-like device that is comfortably mounted on the turtle shell by magnetic force. After the design was completed, they used the Zortrax M200 3D printer to print the hind legs.
Of course, there have been many failures in the design phase, but they have continued to improve and finally perfect the final design. The final design of the rear limb assembly and disassembly is very convenient, using a black Z-ULTART material to print, fixed on the turtle shell by two neodymium magnets.
It turns out that this hind limb is great for Uga, and the veterinarian and 3D printing team are excited to see Uga use this hind limb to crawl the first step. Today, 3D printing technology has shown great potential in the field of animal rescue, and it is hoped that it will continue to save more animals in the future.
