Wenzhou businessman Yemen recycles plastic bottles and earns 7 million a year

Yemen is located at the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Adjacent to Saudi Arabia and Oman, Yemen has more than 3,000 years of written history and is one of the cradle of ancient civilizations in the Arab world. The land area is 555,000 square kilometers and the population is 23 million. Yemen’s economic backwardness is one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world. Nearly half of its population’s daily income is lower than the poverty line’s US$2. The economic source of Yemen relies mainly on oil. The output value of oil generally accounts for more than 70% of the total output value of its national economy. Each year, oil exports account for about 95% of its total export value.

The recycling price of an abandoned water bottle is around a corner. Many people will have the memory of collecting mineral water bottles to make pocket money. However, in Yemen, thousands of miles away, the locals are not interested in these abandoned mineral water bottles. The owner of a shoe company in the city, Dai Guolin, saw the business opportunities in the mineral water bottles discarded by Yemeni people. He invested in a mineral water bottle recycling plant in the local area. One year more than 7 million gold.

Yemen Street is full of mineral water bottles

As early as a dozen years ago, Dai Guolin sold the slippers made in “Wenzhou” to Yemen and set up marketing points there. While doing business, he found abandoned bottles of mineral water everywhere on Yemen's road, and few people would receive it. The idea of “turning waste into treasure” was created in Dai Guolin’s head: recycling waste water bottles into PET plastic chips and selling them to the country.

Therefore, Dai Guolin asked his son Dai Jianhua to set up a mineral water bottle recycling plant in Sana'a capital, Sanaa. When Dai Jianhua went to the local purchasing station and requested to recycle abandoned water bottles, the people who bought the station did not believe it could sell the money. As a result, Dai Jianhua gave the station a deposit of $300 in advance to allow them to recycle abandoned water bottles.

"In order to increase their enthusiasm, we have just begun to give money even after the delivery." Dai Guolin said that the local government just to take the way to digest mineral water bottles. At the beginning, the locals helped them to recycle a bottle of mineral water for about RMB 45,000, which costs about 2,000 yuan per ton.

In the beginning, Dai Guolin cooperated with more than 20 acquisition stations in the local area and was able to collect 50,000 bottles of mineral water every day. After several months of accumulation, it slowly recovered 120,000 bottles of mineral water every day. "If you want to expand this industry, this number is far from enough." So he raised the recycling cost to 5,000 yuan per ton. “Now the local bottle of mineral water has a higher wage than the average worker.” Dai Guolin said that the local people’s daily income is equivalent to about RMB 40 yuan, and some bottled mineral water bottles earn about 100 yuan per day. Now their company's highest recycling record is 4 million mineral water bottles a day.

Recover 500 million empty bottles a year

After recycling the abandoned water bottles to the factory, Dai Guolin thought how to “turn waste into treasure”?

In 2005, Dai Guolin invested 6 million yuan to expand the recycling plant to 20 acres, and introduced three production lines. There are more than 80 employees and the daily output of PET plastic chips reaches 90 tons. The simplest way to recycle mineral water bottles is to crush, clean, spin dry and produce them into plastic pieces.

Dai Guolin calculated that the processing costs and labor costs in the local area are roughly 500 yuan per ton, which is much lower than the cost of domestic recycling plants. When it comes to transportation costs, more than 80% of Yemen's manufactured products are imported from China. Most of the containers All empty containers were shipped back to China. Therefore, the shipping fee for a plastic piece of a cabinet is only RMB 2,500. Last year, their factory delivered 592 cabinets of plastic debris to the country.

PET plastic scrap is an important raw material for spinning, and the current market price per ton is as high as 7,000 yuan. At present, the market for plastic scrap is in short supply, so it does not sell well. Dai Guolin handed over domestic sales to an import-export trading company in Ningbo. "Recycling processing costs plus shipping fees and tariffs, the current profit is about seven or eight hundred yuan per ton." Dai Guolin said.

In these years, the mineral water bottles that Dai Guolin collected accounted for about 65% of Yemen's total, and the recycling plants cooperated with more than 300 acquisition stations in Yemen. Last year, Dai Guolin recycled 13,000 tons of mineral water bottles in Yemen, equivalent to 500 million mineral water bottles.

Integrate resources to grow recycling industry

Today, abandoned water bottles have become a lucrative thing for Yemeni people. Many locals also followed the trend and set up a small recycling plant to sell the shredded pieces of plastic to them. Dai Guolin said that those mineral water bottles that had been buried could not be digested for 200 years. They solved this environmental problem and the local government also provided a seven-year tax-free preferential policy.

“We are now doing market research in Germany and want to ship European bottles back to Yemen for processing.” Dai Guolin confidently talked about the idea of importing mineral water bottles in Europe. At present, they are working with a large-scale supplier in Germany. It is estimated that 1,500 tons of mineral water bottles can be provided in one day. At the same time, they are also negotiating with the Yemeni government to win more preferential policies and then expand the scale of the company.

In addition, Dai Guolin also cherishes a plan to integrate overseas resources for Wenzhou and expand the recovery industry that “turns waste into treasure” in developing countries. Dai Guolin said that some relatively backward developing countries are not very aware of the recycling of waste products. The local cheap labor and land costs are advantages of overseas investment. According to reports, there are currently businessmen in Africa who have learned from Dai Guolin and want to build a waste recycling plant in African countries.
