U.S. Two Companies Jointly Develop Smart Food Packaging Raw Materials

Konark and Evident have formed a nanotechnology alliance to jointly develop novel materials that drive the future smart packaging market. The team used Konark's polymer and Evident's Quantum Dots to increase the spectral sensitivity of tiny plastic solar cells. The two U.S. companies believe that high-performance, clad and printed plastic solar cells can eventually be used as a power source for future smart packaging. Konaudika's vice president, Gaudiana said: "In the course of our efforts to promote the advancement of electro-optical technology, we also learned how to use our polymer to obtain the sensitivity of infrared radiation outside the visible spectrum. The purpose of this collaboration is to determine how much more energy can be absorbed. The most light-rich material, and eventually put into commercial production and processing."

Smart packaging is described as an ideal package that can detect or display the freshness of a food or determine whether a frozen food is thawed during storage and transportation. Advances in packaging technology have produced oxygen scavenger, anti-bacterial films and breathable packaging, while control packaging has brought about improved air packaging, moisture absorption and other forms of mixed packaging to keep food fresh.
