China's packaging machinery industry started relatively late, but it has made significant progress over the past few decades. In the 1970s, the Beijing Institute of Commercial Machinery developed China's first packaging machine by studying Japanese technology. After more than two decades of development, the industry has grown to become one of the top ten sectors in the machinery industry. It now plays a crucial role in supporting the rapid growth of China's packaging sector, with some machines filling domestic market gaps and meeting local demand. A number of products are even exported internationally. However, despite this progress, the export value of China's packaging machinery remains below 5% of its total output, while the import value is nearly equal to the total output, highlighting the gap between China and developed countries.
Despite these challenges, the industry has seen promising developments, particularly with the rise of pillow-type packaging machines. These machines represent the latest advancements in automatic, continuous shrink packaging equipment. They utilize quartz far-infrared heating, which is energy-efficient and saves over 15% in electricity consumption. The shrinking temperature and motor speed can be adjusted stably and over a wide range, and the roller rotation system allows for continuous operation. As a result, these thermal shrink machines offer advanced design, reliable performance, energy efficiency, excellent shrink effects, an attractive structure, and ease of use and maintenance. They are suitable for any type of shrink film and provide better performance compared to older models, offering superior packaging quality and user-friendliness.
Pillow-type packaging machines have a high packaging capacity and are ideal for various product specifications, both for food and non-food items. They can handle unbranded materials as well as pre-printed roll materials used for high-speed packaging. During the packaging process, issues such as misalignment due to color patch errors, material stretching, or mechanical transmission can cause the sealing and cutting positions to shift. To address this, packaging design must incorporate automatic positioning systems. These systems typically rely on the positioning standards of the packaging materials and can be classified into forward and backward types, brake types, or two-transmission synchronization systems based on their error compensation methods.
While the industry is growing rapidly, there are still many challenges. Currently, the overall level of China's packaging machinery industry is not yet high enough. The market is increasingly dominated by a few large players. Except for corrugated box packaging machinery and some smaller machines that have certain advantages and scale, most other packaging equipment lacks systematic development and large-scale production. Especially in areas requiring large-scale production lines—such as liquid filling systems, complete beverage packaging lines, and aseptic packaging systems—these are largely controlled by international packaging machinery giants. Domestic companies need to take proactive measures to cope with the strong competition from foreign brands.
According to the editor of China Packaging Network, although there are still many shortcomings in the current packaging machinery market, it is expected that with time and experience, the industry will recognize its weaknesses and work to improve them. The pillow-type packaging machine, in particular, is expected to grow and evolve in a competitive environment, becoming more refined and efficient over time.
