China's packaging machinery industry started relatively late, but it has made significant progress over the decades. In the 1970s, the Beijing Institute of Commercial Machinery developed China's first packaging machine by studying Japanese technology. After more than two decades of development, China's packaging machinery has grown into one of the top ten industries in the machinery sector, playing a crucial role in supporting the rapid growth of the domestic packaging industry. Some of the machines have filled market gaps and are now capable of meeting most of the domestic demand, with certain products even being exported abroad.
However, despite these achievements, the export value of China's packaging machinery still accounts for less than 5% of total output, while import values are nearly equal to the total output, indicating that the industry is still far behind developed countries.
In this context, pillow-type packaging machines have emerged as a promising innovation in the field. These are the latest automatic continuous shrink packaging equipment in China, utilizing quartz infrared tubes for heating, which results in energy savings of over 15%. The shrinking temperature and motor speed can be adjusted stably and over a wide range, and the roller rotation system allows for continuous operation. This makes the thermal shrinkage machine highly efficient, reliable, and user-friendly, with excellent sealing performance and an attractive design. It can be used with any shrink film and offers better performance compared to earlier models.
Pillow-type packaging machines have strong packaging capacity and are suitable for a variety of product specifications, both for food and non-food items. They can handle unbranded materials as well as high-speed packaging using pre-printed roll materials. During the packaging process, issues such as misalignment due to printing errors, material stretching, or mechanical transmission can cause deviations in the sealing and cutting positions. To address this, automatic positioning systems are essential. These systems typically use photoelectric sensors to detect and correct position errors, ensuring accurate sealing and cutting. There are different types of positioning systems, including forward-backward, brake, and two-transmission synchronization systems, each designed to compensate for specific types of errors.
Despite rapid industry growth, challenges remain. Currently, the overall level of China’s packaging machinery industry is still not high enough. The market is increasingly dominated by large multinational companies, especially in areas like liquid filling lines, complete beverage packaging systems, and aseptic packaging production lines. These segments are largely controlled by foreign enterprises, posing a significant challenge for domestic manufacturers. To counter this, proactive measures must be taken to strengthen competitiveness and reduce dependency on foreign technologies.
According to the editor of China Packaging Network, although there are many shortcomings in the current packaging machinery market, it is expected that with time and effort, the industry will recognize its weaknesses and work towards improvement. The pillow-type packaging machine, in particular, is likely to thrive in this evolving environment, continuously improving and gaining recognition.
