German and French researchers first discovered the ionic form of elemental sulfur in solution

French and German researchers have discovered the ionic form of sulfur element S3- for the first time in solution.

The research was jointly completed by the French National Research Center and Bayreuth University in Germany. Researchers reported in the latest issue of the American Journal of Science that the scientific community had previously believed that sulfur only exists in the form of sulfide and sulfate in the earth's crust. Some geologists speculate that there may be other forms of sulfur in the hydrothermal fluid flowing deep in the earth's crust, but because the burial is too deep and the detector cannot take samples, this conjecture has never been confirmed. In order to get the answer to the question, researchers from France and Germany simulated a high-temperature and high-pressure environment deep in the earth's crust and produced a similar solution.

When analyzing the composition of these solutions, the researchers discovered the ionic form of sulfur element S3-, which was previously thought to exist only in silicate glass and ultramarine pigments, but not in solutions. Scientists also noticed that unlike sulfides and sulfates, S3-has a strong "maneuverability" in solution. It can carry some precious metals in the hot liquid of the earth's crust and become the main carrier to transport these metal elements.

The researchers believe that the above-mentioned findings can help them understand more deeply the structure of some geological layers and thus lock in the mysterious "trace" of precious metals such as gold and copper in the earth's crust.
