According to US financial media CNBC, 3D printer startup DesktopMetal received $ 115 million led by venture capital firm NEA.
The 3D printer produced by DesktopMetal can safely manufacture metal objects, and requires less space and lower cost. In contrast, the traditional manufacturing process requires expensive equipment, spacious workshops, and workers are still facing certain risks during production.
RicFulop, the founder and CEO of DesktopMetal, said on Monday that the company had just completed $ 115 million in venture capital financing and was preparing to deliver the first batch of equipment to its US customers. As of now, DesktopMetal has completed $ 212 million in financing.
Investors in DesktopMetal include venture capital firms NEA and LuxCapital, who believe that the company's advanced technology has a promising future and will be favored by companies. In addition, the company's corporate investors include BMW, GE Ventures, Google (Weibo) Venture Capital, Lloyd's, and Chuangke Industries.
Daya Grayson, an NEA technology investor, said the team used a product developed in 18 months to solve a technically complex problem. Grayson said: "It is more important to see that they have execution, and their products have a very large potential market, so we make additional investments."
According to the 2016 "Wohlers Report" (WohlersReport), the entire cumulative manufacturing industry last year, that is, 3D printing generated 5.1 billion US dollars, while metal 3D printing contributed only about 1 billion US dollars. Grayson said that 3D printing will achieve growth in various industries, especially in space and automobiles.
The working principle of the DesktopMetal machine is to mix metal and ceramic powder into a flexible polymer, then spray and superimpose to make a target object, and then put this object into the furnace for so-called "microwave enhanced calcination". The polymer disappears and the metal fuse together without changing its shape. The ceramic layer ensures that the metal is not fused together at will, so as to achieve the effect desired by the designer.
Flopp said that the printed objects can be used after they are released from the oven without further processing. In terms of structural integrity, the printed objects are comparable to cast metal parts.
DesktopMetal will ship its first Studio system printer to its customers this fall. The product is priced at $ 120,000, or about $ 3,250 per month if rented. The potential audience for this product is engineers who want to quickly develop and test hardware prototypes in the office or laboratory.
DesktopMetal's production system printer will be shipped next year, the product is to meet the large-scale production of metal parts and components, and the starting price is about 420,000 US dollars.
DesktopMetal, located in Burlington, Massachusetts, currently has about 150 full-time employees and is currently focused on the US market.
Fu Luopu said that the company sees global demand, but as expected, the United States is undoubtedly the largest demand. Whether it's talking about driverless cars or consumer electronics, American hardware research, design, and innovation are far ahead.
In the case of new capital injection, DesktopMetal may explore international development in 2018, but one of the company's CEO's goals is to boost US manufacturing.
