Hi Doctor,
I'm a farmer and own a large farm which breeds a selection of roosting birds, including turkeys. I sell these every Christmas at Farmer's Markets and they seem to go down a treat with the locals. Even though Christmas is a while away, I want to start selling them in November and need boxes to pack them up. The only problem is I won't know the size of the turkeys until they are packed—can you help?

September seems like an unusual time to start thinking about Christmas, but actually, we're already getting a lot of requests from businesses looking to get ahead of the Christmas rush. When it comes to packaging food items like turkeys, it's important to find the right balance—too big and the product might move around, risking damage. Too small and you could end up squeezing the turkey, which isn’t great for either the bird or your reputation.
For this reason, I'd recommend using bags instead of boxes. There are two main options: white carrier bags, commonly used in supermarkets and shops, offer excellent strength and are made with a biodegradable additive, making them eco-friendly after the holidays. If you're looking for something that looks a bit more professional, medium-duty polythene bags are a great choice. They come in various sizes, protect against dust and moisture, and can be sealed tightly with cable ties or a heat sealer. Plus, they’re transparent, which helps showcase your product and makes it easier for customers to store directly in the fridge or freezer.
If you still prefer using boxes, I’d suggest putting the bagged turkeys into a strong, double-walled box—something like 30 x 18 x 18 inches. These have hand holes for easy lifting and provide extra protection during transport.
