Packaging Doctor

Dear Doctor,

I run a small and unique business that specializes in repairing toy trains, some of which are considered antique. These items require a lot of protection during transport, especially since they can be up to 100 cm long and need to be packaged flat. The main issue I’m facing is that I can’t find any suitable boxes for them—long, narrow containers are really hard to come by!

Does Kite offer anything that could work for my needs?

Thanks, Roland

Hi Roland,

Ah, I’m afraid you’ve stumbled upon an age-old problem—very long and narrow boxes are notoriously hard to find because the demand for them is relatively low. However, considering the nature of your product, a traditional box might not be the best option. What you really need is something that securely holds your train in place to prevent shock and impact damage.

When it comes to antique or delicate items, protection is everything. My first recommendation would be to wrap your train in bubble wrap. If you prefer, you could even use a bubble wrap bag (with a length of 435mm) on both sides of the train and secure it with tape. Then, create your own custom "box" using single-wall cardboard sheets. A standard pallet size is perfect for this purpose—you can either score and fold the cardboard around the train or cut it into pieces and tape them together.

If you're using a third-party carrier, make sure to use 'Fragile' printed tape. This will alert handlers that your package contains something delicate and should be handled with care.

Best Wishes, The Packaging Doctor
