Large aquatic plants, including Eichhornia crassipes, are one of the major invasive organisms in tropical aquatic systems and may play an important role in changing the gas exchange between water and the atmosphere. However, the role of this system in global data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has been partially ignored. This paper examines carbon (C) flows and greenhouse gas emissions from a small (0.6 km2) water-collecting lake in South India and analyzes the effects of aquatic plants on these emissions. We measured carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions, as well as C mineralization rates and physicochemical variables for water in the vicinity of water hyacinth communities and water in open waters. The CO2 and CH4 emissions near the water hyacinth community were reduced by 57% compared to the open waters. However, there is no significant difference in C mineralization rates in the waters of these two regions. We conclude that the invasion of water hyacinths and other large floating plants has the potential to alter greenhouse gas emissions, a process that may be related to the regional C budget.
